Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease which obstructs airflow from the lungs. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the most common conditions that contribute to COPD. COPD increases the risk associated with COVID-19, affecting the respiratory system and damaging the lungs.
COPD Symptoms:
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Cough
- Expectoration
- Shortness of breath
COPD Risk Factors:
- Above 60 years of age
- Suffering from health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity
- Weak immune system
- Smoke from cigarette and cooking fuel (.i.e. wood, charcoal)
- Industrial gases and pollutants
Prevention:
- Wash your hands often
- Keep 6 feet distance from other people
- Have food, household supplies and medications you need for a while. Maintain at least a 30-day supply of your prescribed medicines
- Check with your oxygen supplier and confirm a plan for continue on-time deliveries
- Always use a working oximeter and thermometer
- Stick to your treatment plan
- Stay healthy, by eating right, getting proper sleep and exercising regularly
Emergency Care:
Consult your doctor or go to a hospital’s emergency department as soon as possible if you develop any of the following symptoms:
- Severe shortness of breath
- Severe chest pain
- Bluish lips
- High-grade fever of 103°F (39.4°C) or higher than that
- Headache
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
